CBS SPORTS-Coach Derek Dooley says he knows Tennessee fans are eager to grasp any sign that the Vols are ready to return to glory.
The coach said his team's opening win wasn't such a sign. It was just a good first step.
Cordarrelle Patterson scored two first-quarter touchdowns -- one a 41-yard catch, the second a 67-yard run -- and Tennessee beat North Carolina State 35-21 on Friday night in the opening game for both teams.

SEC SPORTS REPORT- In previous years, I have talked on the radio and published a weekly SEC football prediction column. Last year, I was 87% accurate including picking LSU against Alabama in the regular season and accurately reversing my pick for the National Championship Game. My inside track clearly has given me an advantage.
With my new job responsibilities as College Scout/Recruiting Advisor and my on-going professional relationships with College Coaches, as a professional courtesy, I will not continue with SEC football predictions.

USA TODAY- It is only a preseason national title, but the permanent dismissal last week of the star LSU cornerback for repeated positive drug tests dropped the Tigers from No. 1 to No. 3 in the Associated Press preseason poll released Saturday. LSU was voted No. 1 in the USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll.
USA TODAY- Johnny Manziel will be taking Texas A&M's first snap as a member of the Southeastern Conference.
LEDGER ENQUIRER- Shaquille Fluker of East Mississippi Community College has become the second defensive back in as many days to commit to Georgia.
Fluker, rated a four-star prospect, announced for the Bulldogs on Tuesday, according to Dawgs247.com. Paris Bostick of Tampa committed on Monday.
THE DISPATCH- Tyrann "Honey Badger" Mathieu cannot return to the LSU football team at any time in the future, LSU senior associate athletic director for NCAA compliance Bo Bahnsen reiterated on Monday after an ESPN story stated there was a chance Mathieu could return for the 2013 season.
"He's permanently ineligible to play football at LSU," Bahnsen said in a telephone interview Monday afternoon. "That's definite. That's what was said Friday."
THE BIRMINGHAM NEWS- After practicing for the first nine days of preseason camp - twice on two days, not counting split-practices on the first day - the Alabama football team enjoyed its first day off on Sunday.
Alabama coach Nick Saban called it "Squad Sunday."
It's "a great tradition we have here at Alabama where our entire team goes to church together," Saban said Saturday after the Crimson Tide's first preseason scrimmage.
It's "a great tradition we have here at Alabama where our entire team goes to church together," Saban said Saturday after the Crimson Tide's first preseason scrimmage.
DOTHAN EAGLE- After Auburn’s second fall scrimmage Saturday, the quarterback competition that already consumed the Tigers spring practices and offseason didn’t have an end in sight.
Junior Clint Moseley was able to throw more Saturday and completed a deep pass to tight end Philip Lutzenkircen. He couldn’t remember the last time he completed a deep ball, a clear sign of improvement.
After a sluggish scrimmage Wednesday, sophomore Kiehl Frazier also said he felt better Saturday.
NATION OF BLUE- On Friday, Kentucky football coach Joker Phillips said he was looking for intense competition during his team’s first preseason scrimmage and that’s what he got Saturday afternoon at Commonwealth Stadium.
“(It was) Really competitive,” Phillips said afterward. “We had an old-school scrimmage, 140-something plays, just wanted to put the ball down and get as many snaps as we possibly could, reason being a lot of guys needed snaps.”
THE BIRMINGHAM NEWS- Alabama cornerback Travell Dixon, a promising junior-college transfer who was in the mix to see significant playing time this season, has left the program, according to multiple reports.
Attempts by the al.com Tuscaloosa bureau to reach Dixon were unsuccessful. Alabama has yet to confirm Dixon's departure.
TideSports.com's Andrew Bone was first to report the news. According toBone's report, Dixon left because of "family and personal reasons."
Heisman Trophy finalist Tyrann Mathieu was kicked off LSU's football team Friday for breaking an athletic department rule, a blow to the Tigers' national championship hopes three weeks before their season opener.
The junior defensive back nicknamed Honey Badger was a surprising Heisman candidate last season when the Tigers won the Southeastern Conference championship and reached the BCS title game. They are among the favorites to win the championship this year.
At a news conference Friday, coach Les Miles would not specify the reason Mathieu was dismissed.

THE GAINESVILLE SUN- After wavering on his verbal commitment to Florida all summer, offensive tackle Roderick Johnson is officially out of its 2013 class.
On Sunday night, Johnson confirmed to The Sun via text message that he spoke with UF coach Will Muschamp earlier in the evening and decided it was best to part ways.

THE TENNESSEAN- Northeast’s Jalen Reeves-Maybin, a member of The Tennessean Dandy Dozen, announced Friday he’ll be playing football at Tennessee.
Reeves-Maybin, who is 6-1, 210, rushed for 1,468 yards on 170 attempts and 31 touchdowns, passed for 1,267 yards and 15 touchdowns and also had 103 tackles.
Reeves-Maybin also considered Vanderbilt, Ole Miss, Georgia Tech and Louisville.

ESPN- Last week, a hopeful prospect showed up at LSU's July football camp. He posted an impressive 4.46 40-yard dash, and he earned a scholarship offer from the Tigers' coaching staff for his efforts.
It's a scene that plays out on college campuses every single summer, although this offer was different for one main reason -- Dylan Moses has yet to start eighth grade.
Considering the Tigers are only just starting to hand out offers to members of the Class of 2014, it came as a bit surprise for a 2017 prospect to get one.
Competition for athletic scholarships is at an all-time high. Therefore it is necessary to use every advantage available to get ahead of the pack.
This seminar will be the first step in improving exposure, connecting to college coaches and getting on the right track to securing a college scholarship.

ESPN- My favorite moment of the John L. Smith era at Weber State -- all 4½ months of it -- was the crock pot full of alma mater nonsense he served during his introductory news conference.
Smith gave something back to Weber State. It's called a kick to the groin.
The next time the Bo Ryans of the world try to explain why they won't let a player transfer without restrictions, I'm going to remind them of this latest hog and pony show. It is Reason No. 9,213 why college coaches have a major credibility problem.
Just 11 days ago, Smith was at Weber's Stewart Stadium as his team finished spring practice with the annual Purple and White game. Smith even did a chalk talk with fans and boosters before the game and introduced his newly hired staff.

THE TIMES PICAYUNE- Although Johnny Jones needs no formal introduction to the LSU athletic family, he's going to get one today when he's officially announced as the men's basketball coach at a 1 p.m. press conference. But Jones already has been on the clock for three days since getting the word he had been hired by Athletic Director Joe Alleva.
Arkansas has fired football coach Bobby Petrino.
Razorbacks athletic director Jeff Long announced the news at a press conference Tuesday night. Long said Petrino was terminated with cause.
"There was no negotiation about how he could remain as our coach," Long said.
Long said he thoroughly reviewed the details involving a motorcycle accident that sent Petrino to the hospital with broken ribs and a cracked vertebrae.
ESPN- Football coaches who win at a high level have been known to survive the most serious of storms.
The storm that has engulfed Arkansas coach Bobby Petrino might get worse before it gets better, and it has already become a huge embarrassment for the university.
Petrino’s success on the field and the way he has made Arkansas relevant again nationally will weigh heavily in his corner, but the stigma that's sure to follow him now might be too much to overcome.
Furthermore, who knows what other details might be out there concerning his motorcycle crash last Sunday night, and more specifically, his relationship with the 25-year-old woman he was riding with when the crash occurred? She’s the same woman, Jessica Dorrell, who was hired last month as the student-athlete development coordinator for football. She works under Petrino and oversees on-campus recruiting.
Clearly, Petrino’s bosses are ticked. Arkansas athletic director Jeff Long announced at a press conference late Thursday night that Petrino had been placed on paid leave, and Long said he would conduct a review of both Petrino and Dorrell.

ESPN-Missouri's and Texas A&M's price tags for leaving the Big 12 will be $12.41 million each, the conference announced on Tuesday.
In fall 2010, both schools announced they would be leaving the Big 12 on July 1, 2012. Conference bylaws state that universities that provide less than 12 months' notice are subject to having 90 percent of their conference revenue withheld. That total was estimated at nearly $30 million for each school, but lawyers for both sides settled on $12.41 million.

CBS SPORTS- Arkansas freshman Marquel Wade apologized Monday for hitting Vanderbilt punt returner Jonathan Krause early, a crushing tackle that led to Wade's ejection Saturday.
Wade has not been suspended for the hit, which occurred during the third quarter of the No. 8 Razorbacks 31-28 win over the Commodores. The wide receiver, playing on special teams, said he thought Krause had the ball when he ran through the returner.
"I was just going out there doing 100 percent, trying to play my game and I messed up," Wade said. "I take all the [responsibility] for everything I did."
