John L Smith at Arkansas Raises Some Eyebrows

ESPN- My favorite moment of the John L. Smith era at Weber State -- all 4½ months of it -- was the crock pot full of alma mater nonsense he served during his introductory news conference.

Smith gave something back to Weber State. It's called a kick to the groin.

The next time the Bo Ryans of the world try to explain why they won't let a player transfer without restrictions, I'm going to remind them of this latest hog and pony show. It is Reason No. 9,213 why college coaches have a major credibility problem.

Just 11 days ago, Smith was at Weber's Stewart Stadium as his team finished spring practice with the annual Purple and White game. Smith even did a chalk talk with fans and boosters before the game and introduced his newly hired staff.

LSU Hires Johnny Jones as Head Basketball Coach

THE TIMES PICAYUNE- Although Johnny Jones needs no formal introduction to the LSU athletic family, he's going to get one today when he's officially announced as the men's basketball coach at a 1 p.m. press conference. But Jones already has been on the clock for three days since getting the word he had been hired by Athletic Director Joe Alleva.

PETRINO FIRED!

Arkansas has fired football coach Bobby Petrino.

FULL STORY

Razorbacks athletic director Jeff Long announced the news at a press conference Tuesday night. Long said Petrino was terminated with cause.

"There was no negotiation about how he could remain as our coach," Long said.

Long said he thoroughly reviewed the details involving a motorcycle accident that sent Petrino to the hospital with broken ribs and a cracked vertebrae.

Can Petrino Survive This Storm?

ESPN- Football coaches who win at a high level have been known to survive the most serious of storms.

The storm that has engulfed Arkansas coach Bobby Petrino might get worse before it gets better, and it has already become a huge embarrassment for the university.

Petrino’s success on the field and the way he has made Arkansas relevant again nationally will weigh heavily in his corner, but the stigma that's sure to follow him now might be too much to overcome.

Furthermore, who knows what other details might be out there concerning his motorcycle crash last Sunday night, and more specifically, his relationship with the 25-year-old woman he was riding with when the crash occurred? She’s the same woman, Jessica Dorrell, who was hired last month as the student-athlete development coordinator for football. She works under Petrino and oversees on-campus recruiting.

Clearly, Petrino’s bosses are ticked. Arkansas athletic director Jeff Long announced at a press conference late Thursday night that Petrino had been placed on paid leave, and Long said he would conduct a review of both Petrino and Dorrell.

Rick Stansbury Retires from Miss State

THE WASHINGTON POST- Mississippi State men’s basketball coach Rick Stansbury announced Thursday that he is retiring after 14 seasons.

A red-eyed Stansbury said at a press conference on campus he “thought long and hard about this, but it’s time to start a new chapter and step away from coaching.”

Gamecocks Fire Basketball Coach Darrin Horn

CBS SPORTS- South Carolina had determined that Darrin Horn will not continue as its men's basketball coach, a source confirmed to CBSSports.com on Tuesday.

An official announcement is expected at 1:30 p.m. today. Horn spent four seasons at South Carolina after a five-year stint at Western Kentucky that culminated with a trip to the Sweet 16 of the 2008 NCAA tournament. The notoriety gained from that one season -- really, just those two weeks in early March -- made Horn an attractive candidate at South Carolina, but he was never able to take the Gamecocks to the NCAA tournament.

NIT Begins Tuesday

SEC DIGITAL NETWORK- Four SEC teams have been invited to play in the 2012 NIT, which begins on Tuesday.

Tennessee earned the top seed in its portion of the bracket. The Volunteers, who were the second seed in the SEC Tournament, open the NIT at home against Savannah State on Tuesday night.

Ole Miss is the second seed in its region, and the Rebels will open NIT action by hosting Illinois State on Wednesday night in Oxford.

Mississippi State is the fourth seed in its bracket. The Bulldogs, who were on the NCAA Tournament bubble, will host Massachusetts on Tuesday night in Starkville.

LSU is also in the NIT field. The Tigers and Coach Trent Johnson will visit Oregon on Tuesday night in a first-round NIT matchup.

SEC Has 4 in NCAA Tourney

SEC DIGITAL NETWORK- The Southeastern Conference is sending four teams to the 2012 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament.

SEC regular season champion Kentucky is the overall top seed in the tournament. The Wildcats are in the South Region, and will open in Louisville, Ky. by playing the winner of the opening round game between Mississippi Valley State and Western Kentucky. The Delta Devils are coached by former Wildcat guard Sean Woods.

SEC Tournament champion Vanderbilt earned the fifth seed in the East Region. The Commodores will face Harvard on Thursday in Albuquerque, N.M. in the first round.

Also making the field from the SEC were Florida and Alabama. The Gators are the seventh seed in the West Region and open on Friday against Virginia from the ACC. That game will be played in Omaha, Neb..

Alabama was assigned the ninth seed in the Midwest Region. The Crimson Tide battles Creighton in the first round on Friday in Greensboro, N.C.

Mizzou and Texas A&M Buyout of Big 12 Contract

ESPN-Missouri's and Texas A&M's price tags for leaving the Big 12 will be $12.41 million each, the conference announced on Tuesday.

In fall 2010, both schools announced they would be leaving the Big 12 on July 1, 2012. Conference bylaws state that universities that provide less than 12 months' notice are subject to having 90 percent of their conference revenue withheld. That total was estimated at nearly $30 million for each school, but lawyers for both sides settled on $12.41 million.
