CBS SPORTS- Arkansas freshman Marquel Wade apologized Monday for hitting Vanderbilt punt returner Jonathan Krause early, a crushing tackle that led to Wade's ejection Saturday.
Wade has not been suspended for the hit, which occurred during the third quarter of the No. 8 Razorbacks 31-28 win over the Commodores. The wide receiver, playing on special teams, said he thought Krause had the ball when he ran through the returner.
"I was just going out there doing 100 percent, trying to play my game and I messed up," Wade said. "I take all the [responsibility] for everything I did."

ESPN-Tennessee quarterback Tyler Bray will miss a minimum of four weeks after suffering a fractured right thumb against Georgia on Saturday.
A statement released by the school Sunday said Bray's estimated recovery time is six weeks.
Head coach Derek Dooley hinted after the game that Bray may have suffered a fracture to his right hand after speaking with him following the Vols' 20-12 loss to the Bulldogs. Matt Simms, who started eight games last season, backed up Bray in the second half.
In relief of Bray, Simms completed four of six passes for 39 yards.

SEC SPORTS REPORT- It’s early October and the lines are being drawn in the sand. Not that long ago, the SEC was dominated by two teams; Florida in the East and Alabama in the West.
Now both teams have strong challengers in their division. Florida has to pass through South Carolina and Alabama must defeat LSU to make it to the Championship game.
Last year, when the two teams met, Alabama was ranked #1 in the country and Florida was ranked #7. Alabama had the home crowd and absolutely put a whipping on the Gators with the final score 31-6.
The loss began the process of Urban Meyer’s unraveling. The Gators went on to lose the following week to LSU followed up by a loss to Miss State and the next week beating Georgia in over time.
Alabama went on to Columbia the next week and took a good beating of their own suffering their first loss of the season 35-21 to Steve Spurrier and the Gamecocks. Alabama also lost to LSU and Auburn to close out the regular season.

SEC SPORTS REPORT- As they left the Georgia Dome, something down deep spoke quietly that it wasn’t there time, yet. For the South Carolina Gamecocks, getting beat by the Auburn Tigers 56-17 in the SEC Championship game was a night they would never forget.
Sometimes you don’t play your best, other times the opponent is just better. There was nothing stopping Auburn as they made their trail through Atlanta for the SEC Championship then to the National Championship.
Nine months later, the two teams meet again. This time in Columbia and there won’t be a Cam Newton to mystify the South Carolina defense. South Carolina is favored by 9.5 points.
Both teams have struggled early. Auburn had to fight off a pesky Utah State team while USC gave up 17 points early in the first half to a less talented East Carolina team. Auburn has won all three games at home and lost to Clemson on the road.
South Carolina is 4-0 for the first time in a long time but every game has been won by the strength of the defense. Fifth year senior quarterback Stephen Garcia has been inconsistent. Top rated running back Marcus Lattimore has been powerful and reliable in the fourth quarter.

ASSOCIATED PRESS- Interceptions by Jermaine Whitehead and Neiko Thorpe led to third-quarter scores that helped Auburn stamp out a Florida Atlantic upset bid 30-14 on Saturday night.
With the Tigers (3-1) leading by just four points, Whitehead stepped in front of a Graham Wilbert pass and returned it 25 yards for a touchdown and a 17-6 Auburn lead 1:26 into the second half.
After Onterio McCalebb took a Barrett Trotter screen pass 51 yards for an Auburn touchdown 5:27 later, Thorpe intercepted another Wilbert pass on the next scrimmage play for Florida Atlantic (0-3) and returned it 46 yards to the Owls' 19, setting up a 31-yard field goal by Cody Parkey.
The Auburn defense, which gave up 624 yards at Clemson last week in a loss that snapped the defending national champions' 17-game winning streak, seemed set for more struggles throughout the first half. The Owls moved the ball at will at times, managing 153 yards and six first downs, both significantly more than they managed all game in a 44-0 loss at Michigan State two weeks ago. However, the Owls saw several drives stall out inside Auburn territory, and settled for two Vinny Zaccario field goals.
ESPN- Nickoe Whitley intercepted Nick Isham's pass in overtime and Chris Relf hit LaDarius Perkins for a quick touchdown to lead Mississippi State to a 26-20 win over Louisiana Tech.
Mississippi State (2-2) scored first and led at half, but could never put the visiting Bulldogs away.
Late in the fourth quarter with the game tied 20-20, Louisiana Tech (1-3) went on a nine-play, 60-yard drive and had the ball in field goal range with less than four minutes to play. But an interception by Jonathan Banks ended the drive.
Neither team was able to generate any offense in the final minutes.
ASSOCIATED PRESS- For the first time in his seven years at South Carolina, Steve Spurrier team is 4-0. But like most of his Gamecocks teams, he can't get the offense where he wants it.
No. 12 South Carolina (4-0, 2-0 Southeastern Conference) beat Vanderbilt 21-3 on Saturday night. But Stephen Garcia threw four interceptions, Marcus Lattimore was held under 100 yards rushing and all-SEC receiver Alshon Jeffery caught just two passes for 34 yards.
"I apologize to Gamecock fans for such a putrid offensive performance," Spurrier said. "But we won the game."
ASSOCIATED PRESS- Plenty has been made about Florida's speed. Turns out the 15th-ranked Gators can score pretty quickly, too.
Florida scored three touchdowns in a 4:31 span of the first quarter, and Jeff Demps iced the game with an 84-yard touchdown run as No. 15 Florida routed Kentucky 48-10 on Saturday night for the Gators' 25th straight win in the series.
"We have that quick strike ability to flip the field and score," said Will Muschamp, who became the sixth Florida coach to start his career 4-0. "All those things are deflating to a (opposing) team."

SEC SPORTS REPORT- I was a guest on an Upstate South Carolina radio station last night and the host asked me about the Auburn-Clemson game. I told him I hate to be the bearer of bad news but Auburn would beat Clemson and leave town with another upset win on their record. He said it would never happen. I told him all Auburn does is win and this week would be no different.
The Clemson rationale for beating Auburn is that Clemson played Auburn dead even last year and this year Clemson is better and Auburn is not as good as they were last year. That may all be true but it has nothing to do with the outcome of this game.

ATLANTA, Ga- The Georgia-South Carolina game is going to be a war. This year more than ever, there is so much on the line for both teams. For Georgia, their head coach is fighting for his job. Another big loss for the Dawgs and the fan base is going to flat out lose it.
For South Carolina, this game is about respect. To be considered a top tier East program, the Gamecocks have to put together consistent wins over the Bulldogs. Something the Gamecocks have yet to do.
THE GAINESVILLE SUN- After a comfortable win against overmatched Florida Atlantic, UF head coach Will Muschamp cautioned his Gators and their fans that tougher opponents are coming up on the schedule.
Like Alabama-Birmingham this Saturday at 7 p.m.
"I told the guys that we got to switch gears, totally different offense," Muschamp said of UAB in his Monday news conference.
Unlike the Owls, who averaged one yard per rushing attempt and totaled 137 yards against Florida, the Blazers can challenge the Gators with senior quarterback Bryan Ellis, senior running back Pat Shed and all five starters returning on their offensive line.
THE DISPATCH- Mississippi State head coach Dan Mullen wanted to dismiss it Tuesday after his team's practice Tuesday night but the MSU program has reached a new territory as a road favorite against a conference opponent.
"Does that (line) mean they're going to put seven points on the scoreboard when we show up?" Mullen asked in a joking fashion. "I'm not much into gambling."
This statistic item led my notebook in Wednesday's edition of The Dispatch but here's the numbers of what State's done on the road against the SEC since 2006.
- Mullen is 7-4 on the road against all teams and 4-4 in the SEC away from Davis Wade Stadium. Yes, that means the Bulldogs third-year head coach is better in conference play on the road than in Starkville (3-5).
OPELIKA NEWS- Of course, this isn’t last year’s Auburn defense.
“There were way too many mistakes,” defensive coordinator Ted Roof said. “Things that we can control and things we’ve all got to get better at. It was a combination of a bunch of things, and we’ve got to work to get it fixed.
“We’ve got to get better in a hurry.”
Auburn cycled in 24 players on defense Saturday, 11 on the defensive line, six linebackers and seven in the secondary.
Freshmen or sophomores made up 18 of those players, with the only upperclassmen being defensive endDee Ford, defensive lineman Jamar Travis, linebackers Daren Bates and Jonathan Evans, cornerbackT’Sharvan Bell and safety Neiko Thorpe.
Roof said the plan is to continue playing about as many defenders for the near future, to build up some depth on the defense.
The member presidents of the Southeastern Conference unanimously voted to accept Texas A&M Tuesday night as the league's 13th member, but the Aggies' official acceptance has been delayed by the potential threat of legal action.
The SEC's presidents want assurances that no individual Big 12 school will sue for contractual interference over Texas A&M's departure. Baylor has not given that assurance to this point, according to sources.
"We were notified yesterday afternoon that at least one Big 12 institution had withdrawn its previous consent and was considering legal action," University of Florida president and SEC chairman Dr. Bernie Machen said in a statement released Wednesday. "The SEC has stated that to consider an institution for membership, there must be no contractual hindrances to its departure. "
SPORTS ILLUSTRATED- By Tuesday night, the SEC should know whether it has the required nine presidential votes to extend an invitation to Texas A&M, which sent a conditional withdrawal letter to the Big 12 last week. If the Aggies get the invitation, they will accept and announce as early as Wednesday their intention to join the SEC. Then, things could get wild.
So, with college sports again on the precipice of a major realignment for the second time in 15 months, here are the answers to a few key questions.
AJC- Just three days after Georgia’s season-opening loss to Boise State, Georgia’s Mark Richt is already getting the type of questions reserved for November of a horrific season. Twice Richt was asked during his weekly press conference Tuesday if he felt Saturday’s game was critically important to him as the Bulldogs’ head coach.
Phrased a different way by two different reporters three minutes apart, Richt gave the same terse answer.
In the first case, Richt was asked if he viewed the South Carolina game as “pivotal for you and your program.”
“I view it as a very important game,” he said, without further elaboration.
A short time later, a reporter from a South Carolina newspaper asked if Richt felt like it was “a must-win game.”
“Didn’t I just say it was a really important game?” Richt snapped back.
“But is it a must win?,” the reporter repeated.
“I think it’s a really important game,” Richt said, now glaring. “You want to ask me again? Because you can, and I’ll answer it the same way.”

LEDGER ENQUIRER-
The Cam Newton recruiting saga dominated headlines for the latter half of the college football season a year ago.
As far as both Auburn coach Gene Chizik and Mississippi State coach Dan Mullen are concerned, that’s where the story remains.
With their teams set to play this weekend, neither coach seemed thrilled to drudge up the past when asked about the Newton, who famously picked the Tigers over the Bulldogs coming out of junior college in December of 2009.
Allegations later emerged, and were confirmed by the NCAA, that Newton’s father, Cecil, asked for $200,000 from Mississippi State for his son to sign there.

THE TENNESSEAN- It didn’t take us long to find out that James Franklin indeed has brought a different approach to Vanderbilt football.
Conventional wisdom called for a punt that would pin Elon deep in its own territory.Right?
Franklin never flinched. Without the slightest hint of any second thought, he kept his Commodores offense on the field.“We’ve talked about being aggressive since I got here, and I felt comfortable with that,” Franklin said. “…
KNOXVILLE NEWS- Dave Hart, the University of Alabama's executive director of athletics, has accepted Tennessee's offer Monday to become the school's new vice chancellor of athletics.
The 62-year-old Hart, considered by many as the No. 2 to Crimson Tide athletic director Mal Moore, has been at Alabama since 2008. He spent the bulk of his career as the athletic director at Florida State (1995-2007).
“I am very pleased to have Dave as our new vice chancellor and director of athletics,” University of Tennessee Chancellor Jimmy Cheek said. “He has extensive experience as an athletics director, and he has the passion and drive to lead our great athletics program.”
ATLANTA JOURNAL-
Here’s what Georgia coach Mark Richt had to say after Saturday night’s 35-21 loss to Boise State in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game at the Georgia Dome.
Q: Opening statement:
A: “Congratulations to Boise State. They just beat us tonight. They were better than we were and my hats off to them. Our players understand understand that and our players understand that we’ve got to get a lot done before we play next week and open Southeastern Confewrence play. We’ve got a lot of work to do. We know that everybody’s 0-0 in league play. Our goal is to win the Eastern Division and that’s not changing. So we have to get ready for that. Boise State did a great job tonight and I congratulate them. Questions? . . .
Our sources indicate that the Vanderbilt Commodores have received a verbal commit from Blake Fromang from Orlando, Florida.
Fromang is 6'8, 280 lbs and plays offensive tackle.
He had offers from a lot of schools and 2 SEC schools of Kentucky and Ole Miss.
THE HUNTSVILLE TIMES- Auburn scored the winning points with 30 seconds left on a Mike Dyer 1-yard run, and that made it a thriller. But coach Gene Chizik, with the bar raised after going 14-0 last season, said he wasn't fooled by the final score. He said the Tigers had a "very poor defensive effort" and he didn't lavish much praise on the offense, either.
Floyd ineligible
Sophomore defensive lineman Sharrif Floyd was declared ineligible, UF announced in a statement before the game.
"He is not eligible to compete until his eligibility is reinstated by the NCAA," the release said. "We have been and will continue to work with the NCAA until this matter is resolved. This is an issue that is not related to sports agents, University of Florida boosters or his recruitment to Florida. We will not have any additional comment on this matter until it is resolved."
SEC OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
VICK BALLARD (Watch Mississippi State Highlights)
Running Back
MISSISSIPPI STATE
5-11 • 220 • Sr. • Pascagoula, Miss.
• Ballard rushed for a career-best 166 yards and three touchdowns in Mississippi State’s 59-14 win at Memphis.
• Ballard scored three touchdowns for the fifth time in his 13 career games at State.
• His touchdown runs were for 46, 66 and 1 yard.
• Ballard paced a Bulldog rushing attack that finished with 309 yards rushing against the Tigers.
• Ballard leads the SEC and is fifth in the nation in rushing, averaging 166 yards per game.
ESPN- The fifth-year senior quarterback didn't start the game, but came off the bench in the second quarter to put a charge into the lethargic Gamecocks.
Connor Shaw started the game at quarterback, and South Carolina bungled its way through the first quarter and fell behind 17-0.
The game changed when Garcia took over South Carolina's offense in the second quarter. He had a couple of touchdown runs and threw a touchdown pass, and the Gamecocks showed just how explosive they can be.
In a flash, they went from being down 17-0 to leading 49-31 with a little more than 10 minutes to play in the game.
The poor start wasn't all on Shaw. Each team has lost four fumbles, and the Gamecocks were particularly bad on special teams early. Two of their fumbles came when they mishandled kicks.
COMMERCIAL APPEAL- "But for that play, we would have won," said Lee, which is also true but somewhat misses the point. He should have said: But for that call we would have won.
It was the call that lost the game for the home team. It may be the call that's the beginning of the end of Houston Nutt's tenure at Ole Miss.
Don't laugh. Remember Ed Orgeron's fourth-and-1?
SPORTS ILLUSTRATED- Over the past couple of years, Les Miles has redefined how a coach best goes about having a great day.
There was no last-second drama in LSU's runaway 40-27 victory over third-ranked Oregon here Saturday night, no need for one of its coach's wacky play-calls or blind-luck miracles. But make no mistake about it, the fourth-ranked Tigers' season-opening statement had Miles' hatprints all over it.
Ole Miss led 3-0 at halftime and stretched it to 10-0 with 8:34 left in the third quarter on a 96-yard interception return for a touchdown by Charles Sawyer.
BYU won its first game as an independent after leaving the Mountain West Conference last year. Heaps completed 24 of 38 passes for 225 yards, one touchdown and one interception. The Cougars outgained the Rebels 318-208.
Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt had said that he hoped Saturday's game would be played in stifling heat and humidity since BYU comes from a more arid climate. But with Tropical Storm Lee looming, the weather was relatively pleasant, with highs in the 80s and overcast skies.
Michael Ford ran for two touchdowns and Jarrett Lee admirably directed LSU's offense in place of suspended quarterback Jordan Jefferson in the fourth-ranked Tigers' season-opening 40-27 victory over No. 3 Oregon on Saturday night.
LSU converted three of Oregon's four turnovers into 20 points and won its 34th consecutive nonconference game.
Crowell showed a few flashes of his potential but wasn't much of a factor, finishing with 60 yards on 15 carries. Murray took quite a beating at quarterback and, appropriately enough, took the last of his six sacks on Georgia's final offensive play. He went 16 of 29 for 236 yards, including touchdowns of 36 yards to Orson Charles and 51 yards to another freshman, Malcolm Mitchell.
All those did was make the final score a little more respectable.
There was no doubt about the better team.
Stephen Garcia came off the bench to run for two touchdowns and throw for another as he rallied the 12th-ranked Gamecocks past East Carolina 56-37 on Saturday night.
Marcus Lattimore added 112 yards and three TDs.
Larry Smith threw for two touchdowns and ran for another score, and Vanderbilt beat Elon 45-14 Saturday night in coach James Franklin's debut with the Commodores.
Franklin showed his willingness to gamble with the team considered the worst in the Southeastern Conference, going for it on fourth down three times to keep drives alive scoring 17 points. Smith converted the second on fourth-and-3, running 16 yards for a TD.
The win snapped a seven-game skid for the Commodores who scored more points than they did in all but two games last season. When Trey Wilson picked off a pass and ran it 21 yards for a TD after Smith's second score, Vandy had almost as many points in 14 seconds as the Commodores averaged (16.9) per game in 2010.
Elon outgained the Commodores 323-309 in total offense and held the ball for more than 35 minutes. But Vanderbilt forced three turnovers and turned each of them into touchdowns.
John Brantley looked comfortable leading Florida's revamped offense, Chris Rainey scored three different ways and the 22nd-ranked Gators opened the Muschamp era with a 41-3 victory over Florida Atlantic on Saturday night.
"It was exciting," Muschamp said. "I was excited for our players. It's about players to me, about seeing those guys see their work come to a conclusion."
Brantley completed 21 of 30 passes for 229 yards and a touchdown, showing marked improvement in Charlie Weis' pro-style offense. He threw two interceptions, but the first was tipped at the line of scrimmage.

Tyler Bray threw for 293 yards and three touchdowns as Tennessee beat Montana 42-16 in the season opener for both teams on Saturday night.
Justin Hunter grabbed six receptions for 146 yards, and Da'Rick Rogers had 100 yards on five catches to become the Volunteers' first pair to each have more than 100 yards receiving in a single game since 2007. Both players had a touchdown catch.
Bray finished 17-of-24 with no interceptions. The touchdown pass to Rogers marked his seventh consecutive game with two or more TDs, tying a record set by Peyton Manning during his senior season in 1997.
Tyler Wilson got off to an efficient, if not spectacular, start at Arkansas.
Ryan Mallett's backup the past two seasons threw for 260 yards and a pair of touchdown to Jarius Wright to help the No. 15 Razorbacks beat Missouri State 51-7.
The junior had plenty of help in the form of a dominating defensive performance and a pair of punt returns for touchdowns by Joe Adams, who tied a Southeastern Conference record with his performance.

SEC SPORTS REPORT--I pity the Boise State football players. There coming into Atlanta, Georgia believing they are the favored team for Saturday night.
The last thing you want to do is go up against a team that is angry and out to prove that they are the baddest team in the country. That’s what Boise State is walking into. The scene will be very similar to the Georgia-Alabama game of 2008. Georgia was ranked #3 and Alabama was #8. Georgia was playing at home, came out in all black uniforms and had no idea what had been unleashed by Nick Saban.

SEC SPORTS REPORT
There is no possible way anybody could have predicted the events that unfolded in Baton Rouge in August 2011. With a top 5 ranking for most of the summer and a national championship in site, everything looked good until August came.
First the newly hired quarterbacks coach Steve Kragthorpe revealed he was suffering from Parkinson’s disease and would have to take on a more limited role with the LSU offense was a blow.
Then in late hours of August 18th, everything changed....

THE TIMES PICAYUNE- LSU football players Jordan Jefferson and Josh Johns have turned themselves in to Baton Rouge police after being charged with felony second-degree battery Friday.
Police issued arrest warrants for the two for their roles in a bar fight Aug. 19 at Shady's bar. BRPD contacted LSU Coach Les Miles and the players' attorney, Nathan Fisher, to request the players turn themselves in, which they did at 10:15 a.m. at the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison.
Attorney Shannon Fay transported the players to the prison and bail was set at $5,000 each. Both players bonded out at about 11:40 a.m.
Shortly after surrendering to police, both players were suspended indefinitely by Miles. Jefferson is the team's starting quarterback. Johns is a reserve linebacker.
ARKANSAS NEWS- Arkansas announced what seemed like the worst kept secret of preseason camp Thursday.
Junior Tyler Wilson will be its starting quarterback against Missouri State.
Coach Bobby Petrino said Wilson “deserves” the opportunity to lead Arkansas’ offense after competing for the position with sophomore Brandon Mitchell throughout the preseason.
“He’s prepared hard,” Petrino said. “He’s done a good job in practice. He’s done a good job working hard at his leadership.”
Wilson handled most of the first-team repetitions during preseason practices and has been the odds-on favorite to replace record-setting quarterback Ryan Mallett since the 2010 season ended. The reason: He was sharp in relief of Mallett in six games last season, completing 34 of 51 passes for 453 yards with four touchdowns and three interceptions.
Wilson was elected a team captain before preseason practice began and had been lauded by teammates for his leadership during the offseason. But the Razorbacks had not named a starter until Thursday, saying they wanted to evaluate every aspect of its two candidates.
LSUSPORTS.NET- LSU wide receiver Russell Shepardhas been declared ineligible by LSU for violation of an NCAA rule, it was announced Thursday.
LSU will seek reinstatement for Shepard but he is expected to miss a number of games until the reinstatement can be considered by the NCAA. He can continue to practice with the team.
SPORTS ILLUSTRATED- Texas A&M has taken the next step toward leaving the Big 12 and joining the SEC.
A letter from Texas A&M president R. Bowen Loftin was delivered Thursday afternoon to Big 12 commissioner Dan Beebe to inform Beebe that Texas A&M is exploring its conference options. In the letter, Loftin asked Beebe to outline the procedures required should the Aggies decide to leave the conference.
DNJ.COM- Given the veil of secrecy coach Derek Dooley has drooped over his Tennessee football program, providing Vol fans with a reliable description of the team's progress has become an art form.
Reporters are not allowed to see the scrimmages and contact drills, so they have no first-hand knowledge of what goes on behind the curtain. They must rely on hand-outs from the Vol propaganda machine.
Following Saturday's scrimmage, for example, all the media got was a narrative (containing coach and player quotes) and a statistics sheet. Can you imagine the news media not being allowed to be present for congressional deliberations?
We think we know Dooley's mind-set with the 2011 opener against Division I-AA Montana just 12 days off.
"I'm a little nervous because of our youth and inexperience, but I feel like that we have a competitive talent level," Dooley said in a PR news release.
Despite improvements across the board, Dooley said, "that doesn't mean we're going to win more games. ...Well, the other teams are improving too, so we better improve just to keep up."
THE ADVOCATE- Four LSU football players reportedly involved in a bar fight Friday will not meet with police investigators until at least Tuesday morning, police spokesman Sgt. Donald Stone said Sunday.
A meeting had been scheduled for 9 a.m. Monday at Police Department headquarters, Stone said.
The players are senior quarterback Jordan Jefferson, freshman wide receiver Jarvis Landry, sophomore offensive tackle Chris Davenport and sophomore linebacker Josh Johns, Stone said.
Baton Rouge attorney Nathan Fisher, who is representing the four players, said Sunday he requested more time to review the details of the case before his clients meet with investigators. He said the police interviews should happen by the end of the week.
Fisher, who said he was not hired by LSU and routinely represents college students for free, met with the players for the first time Sunday morning and the meetings continued most of the day.
Fisher described the men as “upset, disturbed and obviously concerned.”
“This can affect their futures, their job opportunities and school opportunities,” he said. “It’s not just about football.”
