Texas A&M Names Freshman QB as Starter

Published Aug 16, 2012

Johnny Manziel will be taking Texas A&M's first snap as a member of the Southeastern Conference.

The redshirt freshman had won the job after a competition with sophomores Jameill Showers and Matt Joeckel and true freshman Matt Davis.

The decision by Texas A&M coach Kevin Sumlin comes a few days after Manziel had an impressive showing in a team scrimmage.

That distanced him from Showers, who was presumed to have the edge in the race after Manziel was arrested following a bar fight in June.

"Johnny has performed the best at this stage and we will proceed until the season opener with him getting the first-team reps," Sumlin said in a statement. "My policy is simple really; the best player plays. Competition is a great thing and we need more competition at all of our positions. All of our quarterbacks have competed well, and I expect them to continue to push Johnny."

While he hasn't played a down of college football, Manziel had a distinguished high school career, including a senior season at Tivy (Kerrville, Texas) at when he threw for 45 touchdowns and five interceptions.
